Title: OneTouch glucose meter USB interface cable
Post by: ramack on Jan 16, 2005, 21:38
Hi,

I'm looking for pinouts/info for a USB interface cable for a LifeScan OneTouch Ultra glucose meter.

I know what the pinout is for the 3.5mm stereo plug.  However I don't know if there is any additional circuitry in the cable.

Surely it's not as simple as terminating the cable with a stereo plug on one end and a USB connector on the other?

Here's a link to a cable circuit that has a 3.5mm on one end, D25 or D9 on the other.

I'm wanting to replace the D connector with a USB.

I'm interested to know if it worked.  Every store that sells this cable wants $29.99 plus shipping. A little high I might add.

Thanks

The cable for USB would contain a chip that is programmed specifically for the driver you need to install from Lifestyle to make it work, the Serial version would not need anything special and could be made very easily, of course if you alptop does not have a Serial port then you will need to spring for a USB to serial adapter OR the lifestyle cable HTH

Can anyone tell me what serial 9 pin d-shell connector pin numbers should should connect to the tip, middle connector and shank for the serial cable?
I bought an original 25 pin d-shell one years ago from Lifescan, but have misplaced it.  I would rather build my own replacement rather than shell out the $29+ usual asking price for another cable.

Actually, the serial cable for some of the Onetouch meters have a line-driver chip in the D-connector to translate the voltage levels. This is because the meter runs on 3 volts. The driver draws power from one of the handshake lines on the host.. (Ithink it is the DLE... no sure) a Max232 is a common line-driver. I had an older OneTouch that used 2 button cells and the cable that worked with it doesn't work on the ultra... no driver chip... I can clear the log memory on the meter, but I cannot read the log.

I am attempting to make the same cable, usb to 3.5mm for the OneTouch Meter. There is no additional circuitry. The sleeve is the gnd, the tip is the white wire, and the middle ring is the red ( doesn't sound right to me, but that's how my meter's jack ohms out to the usb end. Mike

Mike - I have made the cable but did not use the same wires as you are describing. I used the white for the tip the green for the ring and the black for the ground or shell.
From what I know about the USB cable standard, the red is +5Vdc. I don't know if the cable needs the red because my cable is recognized by my computer, but complains that the device has malfunctioned. Have you had any success? Thanks Joe

Mike,

I have a OneTouch ultraMini glucose meter.  Documentation
indicates it works with either 9-Pin or USB cables.

I purchased software which came with a 9-Pin cable to
connect it to my notebook.  ( Actually 2 notebooks: XP SP2
and Vista SP1.  Same results with each. )

I have a USB-Serial ( 9-Pin ) adapter.

Other serial software works with this adapter.  The
OneTouch software does not: It does not see the
OneTouch meter.

Is this more likely a bad 9-Pin cable from
the manufacturer or something unique about the USB cable?

Hi Guys,

Interesting stuff above and hope you can help...

Thinking of getting a OneTouch Ultra2 that has the 3.5mm jack plug and can get the cable no problem.

However, I would like to pull the data into my own program using a COM.dll

When connected does the device(One Touch) just send the serial stream automatically on 'RXD' or do you have to 'send' something via 'TXD' to initiate?

Or (as I do not have a schematic of the 9 Pin) is the DSR/DTR somehow connected to the TX line also? (as there is only TX/RX on the 3.5mm plug)

Hope that all makes sense, I'm a noob to this but have managed to get an RFID device working through the serial port, just wondering now about the possiblity of other devices!!!

Thanks for your time/reading.

Hey People- Since this thread seems to be recently active, I thought I'd share this. I just spent two hours trying to get this to go and failed. I was using Animas EZ Manager Max and it has the Ultra Mini as an option. Tried all the drivers, cable combos, db-9 connector, usb connector. So then I just found this link, called and they are sending me a free cable!

lifescan.com/healthvault/index.html is the ticket.  I just called them and they are sending me a free USB cable for my new OT UltraMini.  I too was about to shell out $29.95/  Also, on the LifeScan website, the provision for upgrading your software to 2.3.2 while it says you must already have the previous version already installed, it is not true and it installs just fine.  Also, while the 2.3.2 version is tested only up to Vista 32, I just installed it on Win 7, 64 bit with no problems or glitches.  Works just fine.  In summary:  I got the meter free, the software free and the cable free, how great is that? ;D

After thinking I would build a cable and seeking pin-outs, I found this site and a lead on obtaining a free interface cable.  Go to this site
lifescan.com/healthvault/index.html  which will refer you to a place to make a phone call:  ALOM Technologies 1-888-334-9522.  I asked to obtain a FREE replacement for a One Touch Ultrasmart meter (USB) and they asked for name and address and said they would send UPS ground and I would receive in 7-10 days.  I asked again if fee and they replied "yes."  The person who answered was very nice and helpful and I think identified herself as working for Lifescan who also will sell you the cable for $29.95 plus S&H. I am pleased and grateful  but also puzzled.   Granted, the paid version has the software and the cable but the software can be downloaded for free.  April 13, 2011

Thanks for this info!!
I ordered the cable 11/9/11 from ALOM Technologies 1-888-334-9522, Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.    http://lifescan.com/healthvault/index.html  The ALOM customer service (answered as Lifescan) person told me everyone can get one cable for free.

I tried contacting Lifescan from their main web site contact info (three different times) and was instructed to contact one of three vendors that each charge $29.99+S&H.  That is when I started searching for an alternative.  Bayer Contour USB is $25 @ CVS plus there is a $5 off Bayer coupon available.  Bayer test strips cost 30% less.  Does anyone have experience with the Ultra Mini and Contour USB and software?

This all new to me and I am trying to learn quickly.

This is what I did... It is a little bit more than just a connector USB to 3.5mm TRS conector.

    1. go to Ebay and look for  - DB 9 Female to TRS 3.5mm Male Plug Serial Data Cable - 4.95US free shipping
    2.  also for a USB to DB9 adapter - USB to RS232 Serial Port 9 Pin DB9 Cable Serial COM Port Adapter - $4-6 US

THIS IS IMPORTANT
The adapter USB to DB9 needs to install as a COM port.   You DO NOT want the ones that installs
as a  Human Interface Devices or HID

Most of the COM PORT state made the adapter is made for PDA connections.
Make sure you get a positive Email  from vendor stating installs as a COM port prior to buying.
Else you will have 3 adapters like me.

The COM port adapters work DTR/CRS/RTS signals on the COM port even they are not used.

So for ten bucks and 20 days of waiting for Mail ..... your set.

Thanks for Reading....hope it helps

Also I'm using XP still and I have not tested this on Windows Vista/7/8 as don't own these OS's.

Yes old topic.  But wanted to comment on last post in case somebody runs across this thread in future as these meters and the over priced cables are still being sold.

I ordered both cables mentioned in previous post.  Got the serial data cable today.  Tried plugging it into computer serial port directly.  Yea I have an old computer!  Software couldnt find meter.  I assume this latest version of software only looks for usb ports??? Or converter cable chipset??

The serial to usb converter cable is on its way via slow boat from China so try again then.  It has the PL2303 chip so assume it mimics actual serial port rather than the HID port mentioned.

This is only webpage where I found the suggestion of serial data cable + converter cable mentioned.  And I think its great suggestion if it still works.  Hate to think how many people been ripped off buying either the way overpriced official OneTouch cable or the somewhat overpriced knockoff cable now available several places on Amazon.
