I felt bad for mouthing-off about the error in the diagram provided by our hosts here, so I researched the issue and can provide the following additional information.

Pin Out Of "FutureDial" cable #47
(Purchased from Radio Shack for $23 US)
"For Audiovox Models 8200, 8500, 8600
This cable set uses the PL-2303 USB to Serial chip,
RS-232 signal designations collected from the following web link:
http://www.laogu.com/down/pl2303.pdf

Pin One is on left, when looking into phone connector
with keypad facing "up" (away from the Earth - NASA).

From the powersupply supplied with the Audiovox CDM-8500VM,
the additional pin information...

A "universal" driver for this cable that supplies "basic"
support (using BITPIM) for the CDM-8500VM can be found at;
http://www.futuredial.com/support/download/prolificdrivers.zip

BITPIM can be found at;
http://www.bitpim.org/

I used this cable to install an additional Ringtone following the information provided by this link;

Are the pin descriptions the device pinout, or what that pin should be connected to on the serial port?

PAL

This pinout does not work for me ( COM connections, Max232)

Really worked pinout (tested by me):

CMD8500
[ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ]
22 1

18,19 - GND
4 - POWER ON
5 - Tx
6 - Rx
20,21 - Vbat+

1) numbers follow right-to-left (keypad up)

2) This is for flash only. For use as data-cable (in data|fax mode & modem)
you must connect pin 7 to ground (this is "cable detection" pin)

Renumber this pinout from left to right and you will got same pinout, except Tx/Rx are swapped. I don't know correct position of this signals, but I've included this information into document.
