It seems that the Toshiba 1.8" drives have a different pinout than the Hitachi 1.8" drives, and there's even a third one using a flat flex cable that fits into a latching ZIF connector. I found one:

Which, except for the power being 3.3v instead of 5v, is the same as a 44-pin laptop pinout. It's a smaller connector and female gender, so it looks like CF but is not the same pinout.
