Title: KORG synthesizer FDD help needed
Post by: BusyBass on Feb 03, 2007, 17:51
As a musician among several other instruments I own two Korg i5S interactive keyboard workstations. I can use the normal playing mode on the keyboard except for the floppy functions and its capabilities are now limited. The floppy drive in both of them doesn't function normally and it is impossible to read the data from the floppy to the keyboard: midi files, BSQ files, any kind of data. The message on the screen says: cannot read disk.
The authorised KORG dealer in Croatia where I live doesn't haver the will to do anything about it, so I took the unit to another service where they told me the problem is only the rubber belt that rotates the floppy. Since this is such a specific part, they couldn't find any replacement. Maybe somebody could direct me where to find this kind of rubber belt?
After having searched without success the WEB for a replacement floppy drive for my Korg, now I'd like to know if I could connect a standard FDD instead of the original?Would it be possible to know where the corresponding contacts go?

The Korg FDDs have a ribon cable with thin 26 connecting ends (no plugs!) on which it is written: AWM  2896 80C  VW-I  TOTOKU-Y
The ribon cable end fits precisely into a very narrow slot on the motherboard and on the FDD with its other end.

Thanks for any advice,
                                BusyBass

Here are the details that could be read from the floppy drives.

Find a Panasonic parts shop, they should be able to help you.

Yeah, yeah, but all they can do is throw away and replace today's computer parts and when you ask them something like this, they are tired, it's not in their knowledge, go and ask somewhere else....I HAVE tried many of their services in Croatia and that is why I'm asking somebody else for help.  :D

I have exactly the same problem. FDD at my Korg N364 can't read the floppy disk.
Do you have any solution/ideas?
New FDD price is about 260 Euro... so I would like to avoid such spending...
My FDD model is: EME216KR.

hello guys, I`m pedro and have the same problem with my fdd. I don`t know if you solve the problem but... regarding the answer that the man told to busybass I solve the problem.
I`ve opened the korg toke off the fdd and put the rubber in the fridge. The rubber shrinks. You can use a small rubber and try.

Hi Everyone,

Im on the modification of converting the 26pins to 34 pins FDD. I need some resources like a circuit diagram of the KORG. In this way i can study the pins of the 26 pins FDD. It will take time for me to match the remaining pins of the 26 pins FDD to the 34 pins FDD if i cannot get some resources.
Lets help each other so everybody is happy.

;D

This can't help you directly, but can be useful for replacing the fdd (floppy disk drive) by hardware emulating it.

HxC Floppy Emulator (http://www.torlus.com/floppy/)

They already support the KORG DSS-1 music synth as you can see here (http://www.reflexmusic.de/DSS-1/)

Maybe they can help you about your problem and adding support to your device. Ask on their forums (http://www.torlus.com/floppy/forum/) ;)

Here is a link for drive belts.
It might be easier than making a custom interface.
http://www.kenselectronics.com/lists/belts.htm

This site seems to be dedicated to getting you the belt you need.

I just don't get why Korg had to go hi-tech for this parts connection.
They should have at least provided a CD rom writer.

hi everybody i to had the same problem but i could resolve it with the help of a local electronic service shop. they changed n364 's 26 pi to standard36 pin floppy drive. i spent only Rs 1500 for it

Post by: zoroklick on Jul 01, 2008, 06:03
It is the easiest solution, but I don't have the pinouts of 26pin connector... If you have them sreejnv please post for the rest of us.
Rs stands for rupee? India is a little too far for me to come and repair my N364 at your local shop, so the pinouts would be great :) Thanks  ;)

I've found pinouts for the Floppy controler but not for the connector itself. Will post if I do something with it. Also I've tried deepfreezing the belt of the floppy motor and made a progress - I don't get the "Drive not ready" error anymore... Now it's "Data error" :) :)

P.S. Asking if anyone has the N364 Service Manual would be obsolete? :)

Hi zoroklick,
I have found this:
h t t p : //tinyurl.com/67983y

See the Laptop diskdrive (26pin) to 34 pin MSX drive connector section.

I have readed on the net that this scheme works with the old korg keyboards with FDD 26 pins.
If you want: try it and post the result ;D

Sorry for my english

Sorry I was on vacation...
I've found a workaround to our problem. Basically there's a way to upload files directly from the computer to N364 via MIDI cable/interface.
I've found software for X3 keyboard on the Yahoo Group "korg-x3" which works well with N364 and converts *.pcg to SysEx file (*.syx). Then, you'll need some MIDI software that's able to send SysEx to the N364 - MIDIOx is recommended but it didn't work for me so I'm using MidiQuest. And that's it. Enjoy :)

Hi, zoroklick, can you provide a link to that software you mention? It might be just the thing for my unresponsive N364 floppy drive
Thanks

Dimitris,
Actually there's no direct link to the converter. It can only be found on the Yahoo Group "korg-x3". To obtain it you have to join the group, and wait for the owner to approve your membership (i've waited a week or so). Once you've gained membership, go to the files section, then to the Support folder and download the X3File2Sysex.jar file. That's the converter.
Group's address is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/korg-x3/

As for the other programs, you can get:

MIDIOX at http://www.midiox.com/
MidiQuest at http://www.squest.com/

I sell a floppy disk drive belt that fits the Korg X3, Korg X2, and Korg i4s keyboards.

It might also fit other keyboards in this series. These units have a 26-pin floppy drive cable.
The price is $11.95 (USD) which includes free international shipping.

You can order this belt through PayPal from the following page:

Hi guys regarding the "belt for the floppy drive"..let me share you something you might wanna try. Almost 10 yrs ago, brought my x3 to yamaha/korg repairshop. I was advised to buy a new drive, so have to order from Japan..wow! Instead, I just have the boards cleaned so I could take a peek of what's inside this heavy sequencer. Got an idea, went home, unsecrewed the x3, pulled the belt...replaced a RUBBER BAND!..well it works but not long enuf. Therefore, it's possible! Got my classic cassette tape recorder..took off the belt and placed it on my x3 drive. HOLA, it worked..hehehe. To make it even more stable, just went to any electronic shop, brought both the belts for sample..I got one at least near to same circumference and thickness..now fully functional. Try it guys, 100% I assure you. Now, got same problem after almost 10 years, definitely for the rubber's wear and tear. I'll do the same thing again in a couple of days. Try it guys, we'll all be happy. Just present the sample belt..(don't tell it's from a korg keyboard..what the hell is that?!that's the next thing you'll hear ;D), say..it's from my cassette/audio component!..THEY'LL GIVE YOU WHAT YOU JUST NEED! It cost me 15 PHP...(that's 0.2141 EUROS)!!!

HI Toursaver3. You mentioned that the replacement belt only costs about 15 pesos at a local electronics shop. I have an N364 with the same problem. It seems you're in the same country where I'm at :)

Do you have an address or at a phone number for the electronics shop so I can visit them directly?

Salamat.

It's sad how companies like korg take our hard earned money after purchasing their products and when we have trouble with the product we are left out in the cold. something should be done concerning this matter. I wish I had a solution but i don't but i will support any one that has a good idea on what we as consumers can do to protect our investments. I have over 12,000.00 dollars in korg equipment. and this really sucks. please respond with any solutions
