Title: connecting RS232 Device with cellphone
Post by: clock7 on Jul 02, 2006, 20:22
I wish to connect a hardware device which accepts input through RS232 (DB9) interface directly to a cellphone without any additional circuitry, is this even possible?? if so please suggest me a cheap mobile phone which would allow me to accomplish this. Some information on the cable I would require would also be appreciated.

No, all usual cellphones use 3,3V TTL logic (0V="0" 3,3V="1") and RS232C (PC serial intreface) use +-12V logic
(-12V="0" +12V="1") you must use a TTL<=>RS232C convertor (with MAX232 chip) itґs cheap and easy... Donґt connect it directly, you can burn out cellphone ;-) if you want to get schematic or PCB layout contact me at: spskh@seznam.cz Hi Nix!

As I remeber (may be mistaken), there were some cellphones with rs232 signal levels.
Try to check pinouts at this site ( http://pinouts.ru ).
Anyway it's very very rare.

Example of Rs232-TTL converter is here http://pinouts.ru/CellularPhonesCables/cell_cable_pinout.shtml

Thanks for the information. As I understand correctly a Rs232-TTL converter is essentially a cellphone data cable which I was planning to use anyhow. But there is another problem as well

Most new phones such as the Motorola C650 come with a mini-usb port. According to motorola device specifications, the phone supports "serial API over USB cables" what does this mean? how do I go from a mini-usb port to the DB9 connector which I intend to connect with my device, is there such a cable?
